GUIDE TO SELF-ISOLATION VEGAN SKINCARE ROUTINE

Posted on

As we spend more time inside than ever before, many of us find ourselves going make-up free throughout the day. While you might be a fan of your newfound low-maintenance routine and think you can forego certain steps within your skincare routine, this isn’t the case.

It may seem shallow to talk about skincare right now, but practicing self-care is more important than ever: it’s familiar, it’s calming, and it’s a reminder not to give up on ourselves.

Following a skincare routine that suits your skin type is key! Here are our easy self-love skincare routine, with product recommendations from vegan beauty brands.

1. Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse!

Even though we are not going outside or applying a lot makeup, it is still important to cleanse your skin everyday to remove excess natural oils, dirt or sunscreen. We love the Gingko Micellar Water by Ere Perez for a quick and refreshing cleanse.  Our favourite is the Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser by Drunk Elephant which doesn't leave your skin feeling stripped or dry.

2. Give yourself a face massage

Give yourself a little face massage in the morning to get that blood flowing and for lymphatic drainage to make yours skin look toned and sculpted. Generally associated with traditional Chinese medicine, ‘Gua Sha’ therapy with rose quartz stone has been used for thousands of years. Use the Gua Sha tool or this Rose Quartz Roller by Ginger June to amp up the results of the massage. Here is a tutorial by Romee Strijd on how to sculpt your face with these tools.

3. Exfoliate

Chemical exfoliants have to be the one product we cannot recommend enough to see the fastest results. A quick breakdown on acids, AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, e.g. glycolic and lactic acids) penetrates deep within pores to eradicate spot-causing bacteria - while the resurfacing action also helps to diminish visibility of acne scars, dark spots and brown patches, so your complexion quickly looks more even-toned and luminous. BHAs (beta hydroxy/salicylic acid) works on skin’s surface and deep inside the pore; most often preferred for normal to oily skin prone to bumps, clogs, blemishes, and enlarged pores.

Our holy-grail glycolic acid is the Alpha H Liquid Gold that is a must-have for anyone concerned with skin ageing, sun damage or problem skin conditions. Another great one that has both AHA and BHA properties is the Prism Glow Potion by Herbivore Botanicals.

4. Boost with a serum

Get that healthy, plump glow by incorporating a serum into your routine once you’ve finished cleansing your face. Top it off with moisturising cream to offset any dry areas from the constant air-conditioning that comes with being indoors 24/7. For intense hydration we recommend Hyaluronic Serum by Evolve which deeply hydrates skin from within and plumps up fine lines and wrinkles. Too add glow and luminosity try Luminocity Face Serum by Biologi.

5. Moisturise!

With the weather changing to spring, we might think we can skip the moisturiser but staying inside with the heating or air conditioning on can take a toll on our skin. We recommend pairing your moisturiser with a serum as mentioned above for an extra hydration boost. We love the Papaya SOS Marmelade by Ere Perez for those pesky dry patches and skin freakouts. If you have oily skin, the Kakadu Plum & Pink Grapefruit Moisturizer by Cedar + Stone works wonders.

6. Don't forget about eyes and lips

Give some TLC to the most delicate parts of your face, eyes and lips! Apply undereye products gently with your ring finger by using a light tapping motion. Try the Cranberry Lip & Eye Butter by Ere Perez to deeply moisturise both your skin and lips. We also love the Lip Aid by Sans Ceuticals as it promotes cell renewals and boosts hydration.

7. Use SPF

Being in self isolation or quarantine doesn’t mean you aren’t exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun. If you spend any time outside in your garden or on your balcony, you’re still susceptible to sun damage. This is why it’s important to wear SPF if you’re working from home anywhere near a window or pop out to stock up on groceries. We love the 100% Natural Sunscreen Lotion by SIMPLE as That which has a 100% natural mineral formulation that is light-weight, pure and vegan.

We also need to remember what we put inside our body also affects our skin. So healthy and well-balanced meals, drink a lot of water and don't touch your face! As we are all stuck inside, it is a good time to invest in vegan and clean skincare and come out of this quarantine with glowy and soft skin.
